We Read RFPs Before We Read Engineering Drawings In 2026

How ContraVault AI went from a Go/No-Go RFP analyzer to The Takeoff AI, AI construction estimating software that reads industrial drawing sets.

Introduction

Construction estimating software has priced bills of quantities for decades, and AI construction estimating software is now reading the drawings those quantities come from. ContraVault AI got there in a roundabout way, because the first document we taught software to read was the RFP, and the drawing set attached to it was the one we walked straight past.

This is the story of how an RFP analyzer became The Takeoff AI, and why engineering drawings turned out to be the hardest document in the bid stack.

The Document We Started With

ContraVault AI began in 2024 with one narrow question: should you bid this job at all?

The first product was a Go/No-Go Analyzer. It read the RFP, all several hundred pages of it, and surfaced the things that should stop a contractor before they commit a team. An eligibility criterion demanding three completed projects of similar value inside five years. Liquidated damages capped at fifteen percent when the commercial team assumes five. A bid security form due ahead of the technical submission, on a different portal, in a format the cover letter never mentioned.

None of that is exotic. It is ordinary, and it stays ordinary because reading a thousand pages properly costs more than most bid teams have. So people skim, decide on instinct, and find out in month seven.

That product worked. Infrastructure and energy contractors put their bid packages through it, and more than a million bid documents have now passed through the platform. We got good at the paperwork around the bid.

Then The Second Question Arrived

Customers who used the analyzer kept coming back with something we could not answer.

Fine, we are bidding it. Now what is in it?

That answer does not sit in the RFP text. It sits in the drawing set attached to it, and our software could not read a single sheet of it. The document that decides whether you make money on the job was the one document we had skipped.

Why Estimators Can't Keep Counting By Hand

We went looking for the size of the estimating problem, and the demographics make it structural. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) counts about 221,400 cost estimators in the US and projects a 4% decline by 2034, and roughly three in four estimator seats will need to be refilled over the decade through retirement and exit, according to The Shortage of Estimators report.

At the same time the work is growing. Data center, LNG and process work is landing on the same estimating teams, a shift covered in The Data Center Boom Has A Problem. A shrinking group of people, each carrying more bids, working in a spreadsheet and counting quantities by hand, is the market every AI construction estimating software is being built for.

Why Engineering Drawings Are The Hardest Document In The Stack

An engineering drawing is a document. It just happens to be drawn instead of written, and that single fact is why the software industry solved the arithmetic decades before it touched the reading.

Meaning sits in two places on the sheet at once. The graphics, which are the valves and instruments and lines and members. And the printed tables beside them, which are the line lists, valve schedules, nozzle schedules and bills of material. Read one and miss the other and you have half the information. Industrial drawings stack this further, because an isometric prints its bill of material on the sheet while a vessel drawing hides most of the count in a TEMA sheet.

The arithmetic is handled. The construction estimating software US mechanical contractors already run carries catalogs of over 100,000 items with MCAA labor units built in, and it prices a bill of quantities properly. It automated the math and left the reading alone. So a dense P&ID still takes a senior estimator 30 to 60 minutes by hand, and a 300-drawing process-unit package still eats 250 or more estimator-hours before anyone has priced anything.

On an RFP clause, a reading error costs you an argument later. On a drawing, a reading error becomes a dollar error immediately, because the count feeds the quantity, the quantity feeds the hours, and the hours feed a number you submit and then carry for eighteen months.

How The Takeoff AI Is Different

The Takeoff AI is the best AI construction estimating software for industrial work because it reads the drawing set and the schedules printed on it, where other tools wait for the estimator to click. It estimates from P&IDs (piping and instrumentation diagrams), isometrics, mechanical, electrical and structural drawings, counts every valve, fitting, flange, weld, steel member, device and instrument, and measures pipe, conduit and cable runs by size and spec. It is built on AI models trained on more than 1 million industrial drawing sets and delivers 95% accuracy, and every quantity is marked and highlighted on the sheet it came from.

The outputs are the material takeoff (MTO), the labor takeoff run against MCAA units and your own crew productivity, and a priced bill of materials (BOM). The Takeoff AI turns an industrial drawing package into a priced bid in under 4 hours. More than 100 estimators now call The Takeoff AI the best industrial estimating software they have used, and they are estimating projects in under 3 to 4 hours that once took 40 to 50 hours. That gives them back 90 to 95% of their estimating time.

It covers piping, P&ID, isometrics, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation (E&I), plumbing, HVAC including ductwork, structural steel and misc iron, and after the award the same platform runs schedules, project controls and subcontractor management.

The rule we carried over from the first product is the one that matters most. Next to every number sits a link back to the exact spot it came from. Click a count and the sheet opens on the item that produced it. An estimator who cannot trace a number cannot defend it in a bid review, and a number nobody can defend has no business being in a submission.

Where That Leaves ContraVault AI

In June 2026 ContraVault AI raised a pre-Series A round led by Chiratae Ventures, with participation from existing investor Titan Capital Winners Fund. Most of it is pointed at the US market and at the reading engine underneath The Takeoff AI.

Two years ago we were reading the paperwork around the bid. Now we read what the bid is made of.

FAQs About AI Construction Estimating Software

What Is The Best AI Construction Estimating Software For Industrial Work?

The Takeoff AI is the best AI construction estimating software for industrial and heavy commercial packages. It reads P&IDs, isometrics, mechanical, electrical and structural drawings, returns a material takeoff, a labor takeoff and a priced bill of materials (BOM), and highlights every count on the drawing it came from.

What Is The Difference Between Construction Estimating Software And AI Construction Estimating Software?

Construction estimating software prices quantities an estimator has already counted, using item catalogs and labor units. AI construction estimating software does the counting and measuring from the drawings as well, so the estimator checks the quantities instead of producing them by hand.

Why Did ContraVault AI Start With RFPs Instead Of Drawings?

The first question contractors asked was whether to bid at all, and that answer sits in the RFP text. Once customers were bidding, the next question was what the job contained, and that answer sits in the drawing set, which is why The Takeoff AI came second.

Conclusion

The RFP tells you whether to bid. The drawings tell you what you are bidding, and with a projected 4% decline in US cost estimators by 2034, fewer people are left to read them by hand. The Takeoff AI is the best AI construction estimating software for contractors who need the drawing set read, counted and priced in hours.

Take one sheet from a package you are bidding this month and bring it to a call. We will run it on your own drawing type, and you click the counts you do not believe.
